Traction

After my sneak peak of Tuesday's WOD, I decided I would finally wear my Vibrums to class. Not only do I want to strengthen the muscles in my feet, but I also hate slipping around in my shoes when I lift heavy weights. It's not just a hindrance -- it's dangerous! WOD 5 rounds for time 10 Front Squats (155# M / 115# W) 25 pull-ups We were told to choose a weight...

Running toward "Angie"
Tuesday, January 05, 2010 7:19 AM
My coach once asked why the hell I don't run to Crossfit every morning since I live a stone's throw away. Yesterday, I asked myself the same question. I got up early on Monday and timed out the run, which is nearly a mile from my house (.97, according to MapMyRun.com). It took me 10 minutes at a leisurely pace, which is only 5 minutes more than driving. Seriously...

Back to the gym -- team workout
Tuesday, December 29, 2009 11:57 AM
Yay for going back to the gym this morning! The coaches are hosting a number of free holiday workouts this week, and I signed up for Tuesday and Thursday morning. We were supposed to bring a friend. I could only find one person who could go to the Thursday class with me. Ooops. I guess no one else wants to get up that early. It was cold, but not too cold, and...

I can't add
Thursday, December 10, 2009 6:30 PM
It froze last night! I was all bundled up for class this morning, and we were all grateful when the warmups began. The WOD: 5 rounds of MAX REPS 1 min pullups 1 min burpees 1 min ground to overhead (M 135#/F 95#) 1 min rest Zach forbid us from using gloves on the bar because someone could slip and get hurt. That disappointed some of my friends, but I had planned...

Finishing first
Tuesday, November 17, 2009 6:38 AM
Something really weird happened this morning. I finished the WOD first. "Crystal" 4 rounds 25 pullups 25 pushups 25 situps 25 squats This one was named for one of the coaches at the gym. It's all bodyweight exercises -- kind of like a broken up "Angie," which is my favorite benchmark workout. I used a green band for the pullups, which turned out to be a little...

Revisiting "Fran" -- Benchmark Challenge 2009 Part 2
Saturday, November 14, 2009 12:30 PM
Today was the final workout in my gym's benchmark challenge. I really wanted to do well this morning, so I made sure to eat well and get plenty of sleep the night before. Still, I did not feel as good this morning as I did the first time. I have my suspicions of what it was. Needless to say, I was exhausted after 9 hours of sleep and feeling a little puny. However...

"Seal Jeff" and my trip to the scale
Thursday, November 05, 2009 6:45 PM
I love working out in the morning. The air has lately been a little chilly -- just enough so I have to wear my swanky new jacket through the warmup. Then I lose the jacket and get down to business. A chilly morning at Crossfit is only made better with a fabulous WOD, and I loved the one this morning: "Seal Jeff" (named after one of the guys who goes to my gym...

Standing on shoulders
Thursday, October 29, 2009 8:11 PM
The other night over dinner, I was telling my husband about my cruddy/stressful day when his eyes dropped to about my chin and stayed there. "What? What are you looking at? Is there something on my face?" He shook his head and grinned. Later he told me he had been looking at my shoulders, which he says are more muscular. I'm sure today's WOD helped even more...

"Jackie"
Thursday, October 22, 2009 7:35 PM
Today was my last benchmark workout for October, although the benchmark challenge continues and I'll encounter Fran again next month. It was raining this morning, and the WOD worked out perfectly. "Jackie" For time: 1000m row 50 barbell thrusters 30 pullups Instead of a run, we celebrated a birthday with 31 burpees. We did this in two heats, and I jumped into...

In love with "Nate"
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 7:47 PM
I loved this morning's WOD. Really, I did. I was feeling pretty crappy for some reason, but dragged myself to class because when do I ever not show up? Anyway, I forgot all about how bad I felt when we started the WOD. "Nate" AMRAP 20 minutes 2 Muscle-ups 4 Handstand pushups 8 KB swings (1 pood W / 2 pood M) This is the second time I've done this WOD . I completed...

"Frantastic" workout -- Benchmark Challenge 2009 Part 1
Saturday, October 10, 2009 11:00 AM
"Fran," the workout, is a deceptive workout. It seems like it's not too bad when you see it written down: 21-15-9 Thrusters Pullups But once you get into it, you understand why some dread Fran. I read a really interesting Crossfit Journal article about how Fran works all major muscle groups -- squatting, pressing and pulling. Crossfit Central made Fran the highlight...

A trio of benchmark WODS
Friday, October 09, 2009 3:41 AM
My shoulders, lats and arms are sore as I write this -- not unbearable soreness, but uncomfortable, nonetheless. It's my reward for 2 days of tough workouts, both at home and at Crossfit. "Mary" AMRAP 5 handstand pushups 10 pistols 15 pullups I challenged Andy to this one at home Wednesday after I saw it was the WOD on a day I don't go to Crossfit. I had skipped...

Complaint department? Go to Helen Wait
Saturday, October 03, 2009 2:50 PM
When I worked at the skate shop, my boss had a million jokes -- and one of them was, "Cindy, just send them to our complaint department. Tell them to go to Helen Wait." That was, and is, Steve, the owner of Asphalt Beach Skate Shop in Nashville, Tennessee. It's been nearly 5 years since I worked there, and every once in a while, a memory of something...

Benchmark test -- "Angie"
Tuesday, September 29, 2009 6:48 PM
For the month of October, my Crossfit gym is doing " The Girls & The Heroes " from Crossfit.com. This should be interesting. We started with a "girl" that I'm already familiar with -- "Angie" -- one of the three regular benchmark workouts that we do at my gym. "Angie" 100 pullups 100 pushups 100 situps 100 squats...
